    NBC NEWS ERROR ABOUT HOSPITAL

On Wednesday, October 4th, NBC Evening News aired a story entitled "Medical Destiny," which used information from a publication called the Dartmouth Atlas to show that where patients live determines how likely they are to undergo certain surgical procedures. An underlying premise of this work is that the availability of physicians and technology may be as likely to drive utilization of health services as the health risks of the population itself. One example cited in the news story was that in , , patients are three times as likely to have open-heart surgery as patients in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In reviewing our copy of the Dartmouth Atlas, we have discovered that the data actually referred to , Illinois, not , . Data on heart surgeries in , , is actually rolled into the data for the polis metropolitan statistical area for purposes of analysis, and it shows a lower use rate than the national average. NBC has confirmed the error, but stopped short of an on-air retraction.

I believe it's important to correct any misconceptions that might result from the NBC story about the heart program here in , , which earlier this year received national recognition for excellence.
